Staying positive sounds simple enough but like most things, it is easier said than done. You never hear about how important it is to stay positive. It's more than just a feel good phrase or a cute concept. Staying positive can actually help your overall ability to deal with situations. A study done by Barbara Fredrickson showed that positive thoughts and feelings, such a love and joy, make you believe there are more possibilities available for you. In other words, being positive opens up more roads for you. So, not only does it feel good to be positive, but you'll likely solve your problems faster, because you'll have ability to see more available options to resolve the issue. Just like any tool, you can sharpen your ability to stay positive. Here are 3 tips to sharpen your positivity: 1. Start with self love - positivity starts from the inside, you can't fake it. Start each day with a positive thought about yourself. Some ideas: you're very intelligent because you solved XYZ problems, you're dedicated because you did XYZ, you're beautiful, etc. Anything that sets a positive tone for how you feel about yourself and how you see the world. 2. Spread positive vibes - if you see someone doing a good job, let them know! Don't ever think that complimenting or encouraging someone is going to negatively affect you. Be the opposite of the "keyboard warriors" who belittle others anonymously in an attempt to make themselves feel better. Encourage people because you truly believe it. Not only are you spreading love, but one day, when someone sends positivity back your way, you'll accept it graciously. And remember, that "Sally" probably felt the same way you feel now, when you sent her the positive vibes. 3. Take a yoga class - the practice of yoga is so beautiful. If you haven't taken a class, go take one!! Here is a beautiful quote that accurately describe the practice: “Have only love in your heart for others. The more you see the good in them, the more you will establish good in yourself.” Paramahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi A struck match in a dark room will pierce the darkness with light, so too will positivity pierce the darkness of your hardest of days. I'd love to hear from you, what do you do to keep a positive mentality? xoxo, WILK More about Barbara's study can be found here.
